Missouri biker dies when car turns into his path

A fatal accident was reported by the Missouri State Highway Patrol on a recent Monday afternoon in Schuyler County. A 68-year-old motorcyclist reportedly lost his life. Whenever a biker is struck by a car or another vehicle, it is not uncommon for the motorcycle rider to suffer severe or fatal injuries. That is because a motorcyclist is not protected by the body of a vehicle nor is ejection prevented by a seat belt.

An accident report shows that the crash occurred in Queen City when a 25-year-old Columbia driver pulled into the path of a biker while making a left turn. The motorcyclist could not avoid the car, and a collision followed. The impact apparently caused the death of the motorcycle rider who was declared dead at the accident scene.

The injuries suffered by the driver of the vehicle were reported to be minor. No details were provided related to any potential charges. However, regardless of whether criminal charges are filed against the driver, the surviving family of the deceased motorcyclist may pursue financial relief.

A wrongful death claim may be filed in a Missouri civil court. The family will likely have to establish negligence based on the way the driver turned into the path of the biker. Once the court has established negligence, it will consider all claims for losses that were brought about by the tragic accident. Along with economic losses, such as the costs of end-of-life arrangements and loss of income, non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering and loss of companionship, may be included in the documented claims that are presented to the court.
