Missouri car accidents: 10 fatalities over Thanksgiving holidays

The Missouri roads proved to be deadly over this holiday weekend. Authorities reported that they investigated 400 car accidents between the eve of Thanksgiving Day and midnight on Sunday, Nov. 27. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 10 people died in these crashes. Although many were single-vehicle crashes and a large number of drunk drivers were identified, one accident led to the deaths of three people and injured five more.

This tragedy occurred on Thanksgiving Sunday in Franklin County. An accident report indicates that a 32-year-old driver from another state was westbound on Interstate 44 when another vehicle smashed into the left front of the car. The other driver, a 26-year-old Sullivan man, was heading east in the westbound lanes. Both vehicles left the roadway -- the wrong way driver's vehicle came to a halt among the cables on the center median, and the other car went off the right side of the interstate.

Both drivers died at the accident scene along with a 2-year-old passenger in the westbound vehicle. Reportedly, five other passengers in that car -- originating from Texas -- were injured. Their injuries apparently ranged from minor to serious. This accident remains under investigation.

The surviving members of those who died in the westbound vehicle, along with the five individuals who suffered injuries, may pursue financial relief through the Missouri civil justice system. In car accidents such as this one, in which the driver deemed at fault also died, wrongful death and personal injury claims can be filed against the at-fault driver's estate. The court may enter monetary judgments, if negligence has been established and claims for emotional and financial damages have been adjudicated.
