Fatal accident statistics show number of hit-and-runs increasing

Being in an automobile accident in Missouri can be damaging enough without the other driver fleeing the scene. However, the number of drivers who decide to leave the scene of an accident is growing at a troubling pace. Those who have been in a crash or lost a loved one in a fatal accident involving a hit-and-run should know that they must have legal assistance to ensure their rights are protected.

A new report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety states that there were almost 2,050 people killed in hit-and-run crashes in 2016. On average, that is more than one such crash every minute across the nation. The highest number of victims are people on bicycles and pedestrians. In the past decade, close to 20 percent of all pedestrian fatalities were caused by a hit-and-run driver.

AAA also says that since 2009, there has been an increase in these fatal crashes. In 2006, there was an average of 682,000 hit-and-run accidents. Almost 65 percent of those who died were bicyclists or pedestrians. AAA advises drivers to make certain they stay at the scene of a crash after it has happened, as fleeing can lead to criminal charges and other legal issues.

When a driver flees the scene of an accident, it can make it difficult to determine what happened and law enforcement must search for the driver. With any accident, it is important to have legal help, but that is especially true when it is a hit-and-run. When a family has been affected by an accident, they must make sure they do all they can to accrue compensation by discussing a wrongful death lawsuit with an experienced attorney.
